From Where We Are
How much can we ever know about the ones who came before?
From Where We Are begins with Gabi, who escapes Germany at the beginning of World War II with her husband and her brother’s son. From there, the reader meets the rest of Gabi’s family, including her granddaughter, Lena, who struggles with drug addiction and an unplanned pregnancy; her sort-of nephew, Zane, who grieves for his wife three years after her death in an antisemetic mass shooting; and her great-niece, Miranda, a member of Jewish Voice for Peace and the an advocate for Palestinian liberation.
Each story offers insight, empathy, and understanding into the lives of eight family members throughout generations. Each begs the question: What does it mean to survive, and is that enough?
